STEM Field Trips
STEM field trips at Cortland Roller Rink.
Most field trips end with a bus full of bored kids. This one doesn’t. Every push, every wobble, every spectacular wipeout is physics, whether the kids clock it or not. Two hours on force, motion, and energy, and they’ll swear they just went skating.

Why it works
Skating is physics
they can feel
Here’s the trick: roller skating is a physics lab kids actually want to be in. The moment they hit the floor they’re wrestling with Newton’s laws, even if nobody’s said the word Newton yet. Why is it so hard to get moving but so easy to keep going? Why does crouching down make you faster? Why can’t you stop on a dime?
The questions that put a class to sleep on a whiteboard land a lot harder when a kid feels the answer in their own legs. We’ll help you connect it back to whatever unit you’re on.
The learning
What students actually take away.
A trip connects real skating to core STEM ideas, including:
Force & Motion
All three of Newton's laws in play on every push.
Friction
How surface, wheels, and weight change their speed.
Momentum & Inertia
Why stopping is harder than
starting.
Energy
Potential and kinetic, traded lap after lap.
Balance
Center of gravity and what keeps them upright.
Speed, Distance, Time
Easy math tie-ins with a
stopwatch.
